Top 5 Face to Face Interview Tips

face2face interview

Congratulations on making it through to the interview stage! Now is your chance to really impress your potential employer.  Here are our top tips.

1. Know your stuff – keep it current

Thoroughly read the job description and be familiar with the details of your CV. Prepare examples of how your previous roles will support your success in the new position.

Do your homework and explore the website, learn the company values and other key details.

Candidates that are applying for more senior roles are encouraged to keep their answers relatable to most recent experiences.  Your potential employer is going to be most interested in what you did last year, as opposed to something you may have achieved ten years ago.

2. Answering the tough questions – take your time

Don’t be afraid to take a few moments to compose your thoughts when answering questions.  A succinct intelligent answer will be better received than a rushed one.  Your potential employer will be interested to hear most current, relevant and specific examples.  Think about parallel experiences you may have had and use these to highlight your skills and experience.

3. Personal presentation – dress to impress

Research indicates it takes just one-tenth of a second for us to judge someone and form a first impression.  When you’re going for an interview, dress to impress.  When you walk into that interview you want to make the best first impression that you can. We suggest always dress one level up from what you would expect to wear each day when you get the job.  For example, think about what you might wear to an important client meeting when working for the organisation and wear that.

4. Fighting nerves

It is only natural that you would be nervous when going for a job interview. We suggest that you find a way to shake off the nerves prior to interview. Some candidates have benefited from using visualisation techniques (imagining what a successful interview will look like from your perspective), others use the bathroom and make funny faces at themselves before going to reception. Using vocal exercises like tongue twisters can also make you concentrate on things other than your nerves.

5. Be yourself

Perhaps the most important thing – be yourself, and smile!
