Video and on-line interviews are no longer just for tech companies or mass employers. Present conditions mean that face to face interviews are not happening. Here are our top tips for a successful video interview.
Make sure that you’re in a tidy, organised room. Try to have indirect natural light and a quiet background (lock out your roommates, families, or pets). Maintain good posture and wear the right clothes – even if it’s only from the waist up.
Make sure that your camera level is flattering and maintain eye contact with the camera. You can draw a set of eyes on a post-it note and stick it above your camera as a visual cue. If you are using skype or an email address, make sure that it is professional. The foxylady69@hotmail email that you’ve used since high school is not appropriate.
Research and prepare in the same way that you would for any interview. Demonstrate your understanding of the company and how you can add benefit. If you can, run a test first. Otherwise, download a list of practise interview questions and record yourself answering them. If there are important points you want to mention, write them on post-it notes and stick them around your screen.
To see how you can perform under pressure, some software may limit the amount of takes you can record or the amount of time you can take to answer. Use a direct clear voice and make use of all the time, ensuring you answer the question completely.
Remember, even if it is only a video interview you are entitled to ask for feedback afterwards so that you can look to improve future performance.
